Saloon car essentials

For the Talisman, Renault designers opted for a three-box body style. The saloon layout - with a distinct boot - picks up on the universally accepted design practice for this type of car, whilst simultaneously blending Renault's warm and friendly DNA into the mix.

To reinterpret the rulebook, Renault's designers went back to basics to establish the ideal proportions and perfect balance between the different volumes. An overall length of 4.85 metres and a width of 1.87 metres endows the Talisman with a generous footprint that is beneficial to interior space and underscores the distinguished apperance expected of a car of this stature.

Renault's designers and engineers worked closely together to keep the roof height to just 1.46 metres and to control ground clearance. They also achieved the ideal one-third / two-thirds ratio between the glazed areas and body panels, plus a 2.81 metres long wheelbase. The long bonnet adds dynamism to the Talisman's profile, and the large diameter wheels (up to 19-inches) are a snug fit within their sculpted arches.

Sleek styling

The Talisman is powerful and inspires confidence from the front with its distinctive chrome grille featuring the brand's upright diamond logo. Renault's new visual signature continues through the Talisman's C-shaped daytime running lights, which extend right down to the bumper. Depending on the version, the Talisman can be equipped with 100% 'pure vision' LED headlights.

The side profile is enhanced by the dynamic shape of the third side window, evoking the world of luxury limousines and the visual promise of generous space inside. The use of chrome underscores the elegance of the Talisman's silhouette, with a strip running the perimeter of the side windows and another on the moulding that straddles the front wing and door. This arrow-shaped feature taps into the design language of sporting cars to suggest performance and aerodynamic efficiency.

The low, broad-shouldered rear incorporates distinctive tail light clusters that extend inwards towards the centreline of the boot. Their elongated shape underscores the car's grounded stance while drawing attention to the Renault logo. 3D-effect lighting provides the Talisman with a powerful visual signature. These lights are always switched on - even during the daytime - to further reinforce their visual impact.



The Renault Talisman offers a choice of ten body colours:

    Nine metallic finishes: Pearlescent White, Dune Beige, Cosmos Blue, Vison Brown, Cassiopée Grey, Platine Grey, Etoilé Black, Carmin Red, Améthyste Black (Initiale Paris versions).

 If the real life next-generation model would look precisely like this rendering, it might just be the one of the sportiest and most aggressive-looking cars in its segment. And keep in mind, the C-segment currently doesn't really have anything that will blow you away with its appearance.

For one, the all-new Opel Astra came out recently and while there's nothing really wrong with the way it looks, would it really hold a candle to the Impreza if indeed Subaru would keep the body design low, wide and muscular? If we had a magic 8-Ball, it would probably reply using the words 'Hell' and 'No', in that order.

Moving on to the rear of the car, the taillights maintain a very dynamic design, though aren't split in the middle anymore like the ones on the concept car.

“We need a real hot hatch for the brand, because we are returning to WRC in 2017. What do you think of the Yaris?” Tada asked rhetorically. While Toyota already sells a 150hp turbocharged Yaris in Japan, called the Vitz GRMN Turbo, the new hot hatch model is likely to be significantly more powerful and available worldwide.

There’s good news for petrol-powered Citans as well, with the Citan 112 powered by the 114PS (112hp) 1.2-liter unit benefitting from increased torque in kickdown mode: 205Nm (151lb-ft), up from 175Nm (129lb-ft) before. This extra torque is provided in the second, third and fourth gear for a maximum of 20 seconds. The Citan 112 also gets an optional 6G-DCT dual clutch transmission.

In 2014 and 2015, with the help of a subtle facelift, the Juke managed to keep things on an even keel as it also had to deal with the surging Peugeot 2008 and Opel Mokka. However, it always managed to convince potential customers to open up their bank accounts, and financially speaking that was the most important thing for Nissan.

Still, even if it’s slightly “puffed”, its British charm is still there and the car looks fresh – which is a tough stunt to pull when designing every time a retro-inspired model with the same characteristics.

The convertible will share its powerplants with the rest of the line-up, although it will probably suffer a loss in performance due to its increased weight added by the structural changes in the chassis and electric roof mechanism. As a matter of fact, the Convertible is around 120kg (265 pounds) heavier than its close-top counterpart. And yes, you still have to call it a “Mini”.

We’re inclined to think that Daihatsu knows its way around a kei car, because it’s oldest Japanese automobile manufacturer. In fact, in its long history, the Toyota-owned company constructed countless models and spawned a plethora of concepts, becoming one of the most prolific kei-car builders in Japan. And here are its latest creations.



Complying with the car manufacturer’s “Your heart will race” theme for the 44th edition of the Tokyo Motor Show, the Nori Ori, Tempo and D-Base are three small concepts, each based with a mobility idea in mind.

Daihatsu Concept Kei-Cars Tokyo Motor Show 2016, The Nori Ori (which roughly translates as “getting in and out”) is described as a "multi-use commuter of the near future". It was built to create an easy access – mainly for people with disabilities – in a car with compact proportions and, as its name implies, focuses on getting in and out of it with ease. It has 2-way access doors that open widely, a retractable slope and a floor lift. Its roomy cabin has enough space to carry two unfolded wheelchairs.

The Tempo presents the idea of “a new genre-space commercial vehicle” – as Daihatsu describes it – which creates a new class of mini mobile retail outlets. Imagine it as a kei ice-cream van, only selling other products. The model measures 1,995mm in height and comes equipped with with facilities for product sales or cooking.

Last but not least is the D-base, which is actually the only car in the trio that previews a production model. Daihatsu says it embodies its next generation of compact cars (most likely the Mira model) and it features the car maker’s e:S fuel-efficiency technologies. 

Mazda's new RX-VISION concept

Mazda's new RX-VISION concept looks even more spectacular in the flesh.

This amazing concept is Mazda’s way of telling us that the RX model linage is not dead and it still represents an important part of the Japanese car maker’s identity. Now, bear in mind that the RX-VISION is just a concept-car, and it will probably remain that way for quite some time – or at least until Mazda sorts everything up with its rotary program.


 
Yes, it hides a Wankel engine under the hood, and yes, it offers a glimpse into the Japanese car maker’s future, but for now (at least) it remains a study, as Mazda stated:

It “represents a vision of the future that Mazda hopes to one day make into reality; a front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car” with “KODO design-based proportions” that’s powered by the next-generation SKYACTIV-R rotary engine”.

Speaking of proportions, its clever design cues might make it appear bigger than it actually is. In fact, measuring 4,389mm long, 1,925mm wide and 1,160mm tall the RX-VISION is smaller than the RX-8, albeit wider.

In fact, it’s overall aspect, with the elongated hood and shortened rear-end, makes it reminiscent of a grand tourer, only with Mazda’s own take and style built into it. But we can’t imagine it as a mile-munching automobile, especially as it comes with a 10,000 rpm rev limiter and a manual gearbox.
